Louis van Gaal: Memphis Depay needed that performance for Man Utd
United went behind early on when Michael Carrick netted an own goal, but Depay hit a wonderful brace before half-time to put the Premier League side back on top at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal was pleased that his side managed to sneak another goal with the last kick of the game as Marouane Fellaini headed home from Depay's cross to give them a more comfortable cushion going into next week's second leg.
"It makes a difference because 2-1 is a very difficult result. We deserved much more because we created a lot of chances," Van Gaal told BT Sport. "It is what I am always saying, you have to be effective. We have a lot of chances and only three goals.
"I am happy because of the last goal. We have practiced that before when we need Fellaini, we put him in the penalty area because he has that quality.
"I am very happy for Memphis because a player needs that. I said it was a matter of time and hopefully he shall continue. He is 21 and he has only played two seasons for PSV, I have confidence in him."
Depay, who joined the club for £25 million this summer, was pleased to get on the scoresheet.
"It is really important we win the game. We created a lot of chances, I feel disappointed I could not finish the last two chances," he added. "We have to travel to Brugge and finish the job.
"I ended last season with a lot of goals, come to a big club and you have to do a good job again. It is a nice feeling to score two goals at Old Trafford."
And Fellaini was also pleased to help his side with a potentially crucial late goal.
"I think it was important to score a third goal and we did so it was a fantastic win for us today," the Belgian told BT Sport.
"We have to be careful in Brugge, and it won't be easy but we have the quality to win the game. The most important thing today is the win. We have the quality to win again, but we have to be ready."
