Previewing the Saints, Ravens preseason opener: Scout's Take podcast
The New Orleans Saints preseason opener Thursday will provide a first glimpse of the team's overhauled defense, third-round drafted quarterback Garrett Grayson and what should be a fortified interior offensive line.
Chris Landry, a former NFL scout and now a consultant for many NFL and major college teams, talked about those elements and more as the Saints prepare to open the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens.
Here is some of what he said about the Saints on defense:
The ability to come off the ball and use of hands are what I would encourage everybody to focus greatly on. First move, use of hands, and then obviously that leads in to their ability to find a second move.
Can a guy like a Tyeler Davison, a Bobby Richardson, for example, can they do something to be able to contribute? They have looked good in practice tape that I have looked at. But, you know, it's game action, and that is going to be key and pivotal. Because there's no doubt it's going to be a different looking defensive line with a lot of questions and you wonder, where is the pass rush going to come from?
This will help determine how much they are going to have to bring second-level pressure with the linebackers. I think we begin to start to tell that in the early stages of preseason No. 1.
Chris Landry is a veteran NFL scout who has worked for the Cleveland Browns and the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans. He also ran the annual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and served as an assistant coach at LSU. Landry is now a consultant for several NFL teams and major college programs.
